What is a Potential Transformer and Why is it Important?
A Potential transformer (pT) is a device that reduces high-voltage currents to lower, measurable values for monitoring and protection. It’s crucial for safely measuring and analyzing electrical currents in high-voltage systems. pTs isolate measuring instruments from high-voltage circuits, preventing damage and ensuring safety. They provide accurate current readings for protection relays, meters, and other monitoring devices, enabling efficient control and protection of power systems.
How does a Potential Transformer work in Electrical Systems?
A PT operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction. It consists of a primary winding (the conductor carrying the high current) and a secondary winding (connected to measuring instruments). The primary winding can be a single turn (the conductor itself) or multiple turns. When current flows through the primary, it creates a magnetic field. This field induces a proportional current in the secondary winding, which is then measured.
The ratio of primary to secondary current is fixed, allowing accurate scaling of high currents down to manageable levels. This secondary current is fed into devices like ammeters, relays, or protection systems. The CT isolates these devices from the high-voltage primary circuit, ensuring safety. In protection systems, CTs provide input to relays, which trigger circuit breakers to isolate faults. In metering, CTs enable accurate measurement of high currents for billing and monitoring purposes.
